Essay on: Hutzilopochtli - Aztec God
The statue of Huitzilopochtli was made by Mixtec carpenters, out of wood rather than the stone and the tools which they used to cut the wood were very simple and were made starting from the rock or of the bone. They had only one principal statue of Huitzilopochtli which was probably removed from its temple to the mayor of Templo in 1520 and was smuggled out of Tenochtitlan. No other monuments of him survived. Below is an image of the mayor of Templo. The side temple right is for Huitzilopochtli and has craniums to represent the people which were sacrificed for Huitzilopochtli, the temple on the left side of hand is for the god of rain of Tlaloc. Huitzilopochtli \ ’statue of S would have been employed by priests for ceremonies, sacrifices and by each one for the daily worship. In the ceremonies or ritual principal the priests warriors of importance raised for the gods would sacrifice to make sure that the gods were happy, because they believed that “good ” of the gods could prevent the “bad ” gods of the evil the propagation. In order to make the gods thus must have a constant supply blood and human hearts, otherwise the gods would loosen their force. For their worship, each house had a separate room which had a tomb of an important god such as Huitzilopochtli to which sacrifices were made. There was also a large temple in the middle of city in which the Aztec priests sacrificed hundreds of people each week to the gods. When the Aztec warriors went to war, they’re aim was to capture the enemy rather than kill them, so they could sacrafice them to the gods. Huitzilopochtli’s statue was important for the Aztecs because they thought that it carried happiness in the war (because he was the god of war) and because he invited the Aztec ones to fight without pity, of forming an empire, and to collect prisoners to also sacrifice to the gods because he was the fifth sun which they believed if he didn’t receive enough blood and the hearts the sun would not go up and the world would finish in the disaster. The history in the way in which it became the sun was this. The supreme gods, who were the creators of the last four gods who transformed themselves into the last four last suns decided to create 1600 more gods. The four original gods then realized that they needed another sun but in order to do them thus had to sacrifice another god. They established a fire in in which the selected god would run to become the sun. They then decided that it should be Huitzilopochtli (sometimes called Nanahuatl) or Teucciztecatl. Huitzilopochtli was very poor and ugly thus the didn gods \ ‘T supreme want it selected for this reason. Consequently it upwards finished choosing Teucciztecatl but it couldn \ ‘T is brought to function in the flames thus Huitilopochtli then was thrown in fire becoming the sun. Teucciztecatl saw this, gained courage and finally functioned in the flames becoming the moon. When the four gods could not see the new sun they discovered that Huitzilopochtli would not rise unless it received the hearts and the blood of the remaining gods. This returned the lord Morning Star of the wildest god annoyed who then defied Huitzilopochtli with a duel. When Huitzilopochtli gained it sent lord Morning Star in the hells. The 1600 other gods agreed to sacrifice themselves so that Huitzilopochtli could be to rise considering the morning each day. This is why Aztec the \ the ‘S sacrificed people to the statue of Huitzilopochtli, to make sure that the sun would rise daily. With the whole this known as, it indicates to us that Aztec the \ the ‘S were very a monk and superstitious because they believed their gods made for raising, to make the war the sun of harvests be developed, to rain to fall, to put fire and to start.
